  Local waters are not yet ready for paddling so we are bringing you an aspect of exotic foreign travels from a couple of Ceyana members. 

  From October 19th to November 7th, 2024, with cameras in hand, Ceyana Canoe Club members Dave Carr and Gail Mannard-Carr set off on a series of three safaris in Kenya and Tanzania. From more than a thousand pictures and videos of animals and birds (including the migration of wildebeests); Neolithic, Maasai, and Hadzabe villages; as well as the World Heritage Site of Stone Town and the northern beaches of Zanzibar, Dave has curated a one-hour PowerPoint presentation highlighting the wildlife and cultural experiences of their East African adventure. (He also will explain what a dhow is.)

  Members are all welcome to view this presentation via Google Meet. Please login to register for this event. The meeting code will be sent to the email in your Ceyana profile on the day of the meeting. Meeting limited to 150 participants.

  We like to limit our early season WW runs to club members who have all their own gear, and experience and skills appropriate for Class II rapids, rock gardens, logjams, sweepers, tricky channels and beaver dams.  These are generally fun runs, sometimes still plugged with ice jams, and a portage maybe required, and given the nature of spring break-up, there can be tight channels and corners with surprises!  GOOD PADDLING skills are required.

  Our goal is to have interested paddlers register (no charge) so we know who is interested!  We could also use a volunteer or two to help with the communication and decision making of what runs are appropriate. If interested please register, if willing to help please email our Trip Chair... help make his/her job a wee bit easier, and let the Trip Chair know which runs you have done, and which runs you are willing to lead or help lead!

  These trips are most often weekend day trips, occasionally mid-week evening runs, and given our "retired folk #s" even mid week day trips could be possible.

  Our Big Canoe Fitness sessions are focused on using the big boats to gain strength, power, and endurance. This is a paddling workout, you will learn many things about paddling the big canoes, but that is not the primary focus. 

  These sessions run every Thursday night depending on weather and water levels from our Buena Vista Storage Sheds, come early to help get the boats to the water, bring your own paddles, pfd's, water bottles, and any other paddling gear you may require.  Paddlers will also be invited to join Darryl and our leaders for Monday evening sessions starting in May.
  

  We expect these sessions to commence Thursday evenings, 6:45 - 9:00 pm from April 24, and will run until late  August.  Once registered Darryl will forward a google spreadsheet so that you can report on which session you will be attending.... full attendance is the default.Coach Darryl will update on Monday locations once you have registered.

  The start date, and all subsequent sessions depend on appropriate river conditions <600 cms.

  The club collects a $25/month fee this year to help with program costs (insurance fees are up), equipment maintenance and replacement (we have a new canoe for 2024).  Club equipment is available for new paddlers for the first session or three, then participants are expected to provide their own life-jacket, and bent shaft paddle.  If you've not paddled big canoes before it is best to get in a session or two before acquiring your own paddle.  For each session a water bottle, rain gear, and dry clothes in a small dry bag are good to bring along.

  You must be healthy to attend any sessions, please do a COVID/Flu/Cold self assessment before each paddling session. If you are not feeling well please do not come.

  Registration will be available from April 15 to August 10.

  Kristoff and Neil are offering to tackle the Sturgeon River again this year, a little earlier in hope of more water.  This Run is NW of St. Alberta for some 15 km.  This run does require modestly good moving water skills, especially an ability to avoid fallen logs (sweepers), log jams, read shallow gravel bars, and to control your canoe to turn, control direction, ferry and eddy turns.  The plan is to meet at 9:30 AM and you should be home by late afternoon. You must arrange all your paddling gear, come prepared for a spring thunderstorm, and bring lunch & drinks.  We will meet at 10 AM at Cunnighham bridge on Meadowview Road.

  Jim & Deb have invited club members to paddle their "home" lake, Lessard Lake.  The live just off the lake 700 m SW from the Boat Launch.  Lessard Lake is about a 1 hr drive West and North from Edmonton.  Best Access if up Hwy #43, past Gunn, Glenevis and then south down Hwy #759 and then west onto Twnshp Rd 554, which turns into Lessard Rd and will bring you to the Boat Launch access. The plan is a 10 AM meet at the Boat Launch, bring lunch, it maybe "on the Lake" or maybe back at the Durnfords.

  We do this a time or two each season, paddle upstream, and back... Why?  NO shuttle? AND a lot to be learned eddy hoping upstream: reading the currents, the shallows, the rocks, ferrying. And a good workout too!

  We'll meet, unload and put-in at the upstream end of the  Sir Wilfred Laurier Park Boat Launch... above the rocks.  Then park up the hill, and not in the trailer zone!  Come with some refreshment, and be prepared for spring weather. You are responsible for all your gear needs.  Let me know if you need something... we can make arrangements.

  This white water weekend is for experienced river paddlers on rapids up to Class III for all the runs, and Class II for some of the runs.  It is early season the water will be cold. This is our traditional Wildhay weekend but as we plan this trip the snow pack is low and we anticipate mostly paddling in Jasper Park.  But maybe the Wildhay will be "up."
  

  1. We have the entire Kinky Lake Campground booked (24kms west of Hinton on HWY16) as we have guaranteed paddling on Athabasca River in Jasper. Driving Kinky Lake to Old Fort Point (our take out for the Athabasca River runs) is approximately 60kms. On the Athabasca River we paddle the full section from Below the Falls to Old Fort Point which is 34 kms of great scenery and up to Class 3 water.

  Less experienced paddlers may skip the upper run (9kms) and join at Meeting of the Waters (Whirlpool joins the Athabasca). See Mark’s Guide For Alberta Paddlers for detailed river information.

  1. This trip is for whitewater boats, with full floatation. Paddlers must have dry suits or wet suits.
  2. Camp cost at Kinky Lake is $50 per camp unit for the weekend. There are 10 campsites each with a picnic table, a lake to practice on and toilet facilities.
  3. IF the Wildhay has enough water we could consider paddling it on the Friday or the Sunday.

  Meghan, our resident birder, has again offered to take us back to Cardiff Ponds N of St Albert on June 4. (see map below).  In 2023 we managed to circumnavigate the lake in about 3 km.

  This is one of the prettiest lake front group campsites in Alberta!   And close by there is lots of paddling: big & small lakes, rivers and modest whitewater in the area.  Our most popular paddling over the years has been the runs on the North Saskatchewan: the Horburg run with Devils Elbow, the Blue Bridge Run finishing at the Brierlies, the Brierlies and downstream, and runs on the lower Clearwater river.  Besides Twin Lakes, we've paddled both Crimson and Cow Lakes in recent camps.  We are booked in Thursday through Monday morning so that those with time can arrive early, and leave Monday, and enjoy the site longer and leisurely!

  This is a large group site and we will be sharing the site with a mix of Ceyana educational programs, and volunteer run day trips, on lake, easy river and modest whitewater.  Members are welcome to join us for the camp life to just "chill!"
  

  Like all camping in Alberta... it does cost, and we are just passing on the expected average per unit expense. 

  These are the "Earlybird" fees (up to and including May 19, 2025):
  - 4 nites at $165 per unit /tent/rv/etc.
  - 3 nites at $125 per unit
  - 2 nites at $ 85 per unit.

  These are the"Regular " fees after May 19, 2025 ($20 more for camping):

  - 4 nites at $185 per unit /tent/rv/etc.
  - 3 nites at $145 per unit
  - 2 nites at $ 105 per unit.

  Be sure to register only one person for camping... guests will be charged if you register them... Camp fee is per camp/sleeping unit!  It is best to fill up our tent or RV with family and friends to keep the per head cost down!

  You will be asked to indicate if you are in an Ed program or coming to day trip.  Given we have some one day Ed programs, both are possible!  Day trips will be organized each morning of the camp.
  

  All camp participants must be a member of the Ceyana Canoe Club, or another Alberta canoe club affiliated with Paddle Alberta!
  

  Camping is rustic, well water, fire pits, clean toilets, camp kitchen and NO power!

  This intro' canoeing program will teach appropriate entries, exits, paddle strokes, basic maneuvers, carries, rescues, and review equipment selection and where to go paddling.   All equipment will/can be supplied.  Participants do need to bring a towel and change of clothes , swims do happen occasionally!  Rain gear should be brought... only thunder storms chase us off the water.  For canoeing a pair of knee pads are helpful, and paddlers are welcome to bring along their own paddle and life jacket.  You may register with a partner, or as an individual.

  Neil, once again has invited us for a spring birding paddle on Telford Lake in Leduc.  This lake is over 2 km long, and hosts a great variety of water fowl.  We suspect that if contacted far enough in advance Neil can (?) arrange rentals from the Leduc Boat Club for paddlers without their own gear.

  Star Lake, west of Mink Lake Park on Hwy 770, is a lovely little lake in Parkland County with lots of bird life and  fishermen. There is a dock and a beach area for launching. Head west on the Yellowhead Hwy. to secondary Hwy 770, drive south and turn west onto Twp Rd 524. Star Lake is about 2 mile west. At the "T" intersection keep going straight to the access road for the boat launch.

  Muir Lake, just north of Stony Plain off Twp Rd 540, is a lovely little lake in Parkland County with lots of bird life and  fishermen. There is a dock and a beach area for launching.   The North Saskatchewan River has many bridges that span the river from the west end to the east end of the city. This trip will paddle under 10 of the bridges from the start of the day at Laurier Park to the finish of the paddle at Capilano.

  July 26 to August 1

  March 10 Up-date: This event is FULL. Participant lottery was held May 5. Captain, paddlers and waitlisters have been picked already. and We are planning a virtual meeting on Google Meet on Tuesdy March 18, 7:00 PM MDT. For this meeting every brigade participant will also need a CVBS and VCKC registration (VCKC membership is NOT required) as outlined in your information email.   Ceyana Canoe Club has paid the $200 deposit to VCKC already. There will be a remaining balance of $2200 due in June (divided 6 ways) plus food, boat transportation and/or rental costs, and personal transportation costs. Crews will be responsible for all their paddling, camping and cook gear, transportation, and sharing all expenses.

  Unlike most of our brigades this one will be based on a single crew of 6 paddlers with NO land support since most route stops are not easily accessible by car. Paddlers will be active all the time without switching off with others.

  Participants should expect to do big canoe training either with Darryl when registration opens in April (Thursdays and Mondays) or separately with the brigade group. There may be additional training sessions for participants TBD. Rescue practice, cardio training and light weight lifting will be priorities.  

  The current route is: 

  Saturday July 26th- Newcastle Island, near Nanaimo.

  Canoes and crews will need to be at Brechin Ramp, Nanaimo by 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 26th, 2025. This ramp is close to the Departure Bay ferry terminal. Drivers will take empty vehicles and trailers to a designated parking area in Victoria about 90 minutes away. Transportation back to Nanaimo and Newcastle Island  will be arranged by the brigade. While the vehicle shuttle is underway, the canoes and gear will be paddled the short distance  to Newcastle Island where camp will be set up.  Dinner is provided by the brigade

  Sunday July 27th-  Telegraph Cove, Thetis Island

  Monday July 28th- Osborne Bay Resort, Crofton, Vancouver Island

  Tuesday July 29th- Montague Harbour, Galliano Island

  Wednesday July 30th- Port Browning Marine Resort, North Pender Island

  Friday August 1st- Victoria Canoe and Kayak Club, Victoria. The brigade will provide a dinner. Transportation will be provided to take drivers back to their vehicles and trailers.

  Big Canoe Gulf Island Brigade 2025 - Payment Portal for Registration
  July 26 to August 1

  March 25 Up-date: This is the payment portal for the registration fee ONLY for those members already accepted onto thip trip. Total fee of $2400 divided by 6 members = $400.00 per person. Payment due for April 10. Our treasurer will then forward the total payment to VCKC.

  Review the Course Change, Cancellation and Refund Policy. Change or Cancellation deadline for refund less $20 is June 26, 2025.

  Ceyana Canoe Club has paid the $200 deposit to VCKC already on our behalf. There will be a remaining balance of $2200 due in June (divided 6 ways) plus food, boat transportation and/or rental costs, and personal transportation costs. Crews will be responsible for all their paddling, camping and cook gear, transportation, and sharing all expenses.

  Unlike most of our brigades this one will be based on a single crew of 6 paddlers with NO land support since most route stops are not easily accessible by car. Paddlers will be active all the time without switching off with others.

  Participants should expect to do big canoe training either with Darryl when registration opens in April (Thursdays and Mondays) or separately with the brigade group. There may be additional training sessions for participants TBD. Rescue practice, cardio training and light weight lifting will be priorities.  

  The current route is: 

  Saturday July 26th- Newcastle Island, near Nanaimo.

  Canoes and crews will need to be at Brechin Ramp, Nanaimo by 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 26th, 2025. This ramp is close to the Departure Bay ferry terminal. Drivers will take empty vehicles and trailers to a designated parking area in Victoria about 90 minutes away. Transportation back to Nanaimo and Newcastle Island  will be arranged by the brigade. While the vehicle shuttle is underway, the canoes and gear will be paddled the short distance  to Newcastle Island where camp will be set up.  Dinner is provided by the brigade

  Sunday July 27th-  Telegraph Cove, Thetis Island

  Monday July 28th- Osborne Bay Resort, Crofton, Vancouver Island

  Tuesday July 29th- Montague Harbour, Galliano Island

  Wednesday July 30th- Port Browning Marine Resort, North Pender Island

  Thursday July 31st- Island View Beach, Vancouver Island

  Friday August 1st- Victoria Canoe and Kayak Club, Victoria. The brigade will provide a dinner. Transportation will be provided to take drivers back to their vehicles and trailers.

• Liver on the River - the NSR

  We have Dad Jokes Day, Cake on the Lake and we also have Liver on the River.  Come join us for a moving feast and social on the NSR.  We meet about 5:00 PM at Laurier Park, organize the shuttle, and hopefully we're back and on the river by a little after 6:00 PM.  We float down the river and enjoy a shared buffet on the water.  Hopefully someone besides me remembers the "pate", (from home, from Auntie Sunterra), crackers, sausage, cheese, garden produce, sweet treats, and not much paddling!  BYOR(refreshments)  By mid-August  the bugs should be missing, the sun is still out and hopefully there is still water in the river!

  We do cancel if it is ugly! Thunderstorms, big winds, major storm fronts in the forecast, high water >350 cms, etc.  It is best to register so our leaders can send out timely instructions or cancellation!
  

  And best if you are a club member, but guests are welcome for one or two of these sessions, then our insurance company much appreciates you taking out a membership, as do we!

  The Yukon River is a Class 1-2 river in the Yukon Territory running from Marsh Lake in the south to the Bering sea in the north. We will only be paddling from Carmacks to Dawson--404 km of mostly wilderness but a bit of civilization every once in a while. We plan on stopping at certain historical locations like Fort Selkirk along the way, paddling at a moderate pace for 10 days. Solid river paddling skills and knowledge of rescue skills are required due to the remoteness of the river.

  The dates do NOT include travel time to or from the Yukon, so at least 3 days will be required at the beginning and end of the trip if people will be driving up. We will be camping at Carmacks for one night at the start and at Dawson for one night at the end. 

  Registration will open once we confirm pricing for camping and other items yet to be determined. We will also have some planning meetings for all who register to work out logistics such as meals, equipment, and travel.

  Neil & Roberta have again offered to provide a outrigger paddling session for our members at the Leduc Boat Club.  For those not Leduc Boat Club members, there will be a $10 fee (these boats are expensive!) for this session, payable at the club house.  And besides paddling you may even get a "Hula" lesson.  Neil and Roberta both lived in Hawaii for some years and brought back more than just paddling skills!
