Ceyana Canoe Club

Trips

Ceyana volunteers organize trips ranging from local, easy paddles, to extended trips and whitewater excursions. We encourage early contact with the trip coordinator to ensure that a trip will not be cancelled for lack of interest, or be over subscribed. Sometimes, club trips are organized just a few days before departure as opportunities and interest dictate. Check the tripping calendar often and watch your email for new trips. You must be a member to attend any overnight club trip, or a guest of a member for our day trips.

Can I Bring A Guest to a Ceyana Activity?

It depends on the activity. Who is considered a guest? A person who is NOT a club member.

May I bring a guest to a:

  •        Canoe/kayak/educational program – NO
  •        Overnight/out of town trip – NO
  •        Local free on the water activity/paddling centres – YES
  •        Local shore event/social – YES

Why all the rules abouts guests? It has to do with liabilities and what our insurance covers. We have a website software limitation on the word ‘guest’.

  •        If you see ‘guest’ on an overnight trip or educational course registration, it means MEMBERS.
  •        If you see ‘guest’ on a social, shore or free local event, it means you can bring someone who is NOT a member.

How Skilled and Experienced a Paddler are You?
The club has received permission to use the Paddler Self Rating Guide from Mark's Guide for Alberta PaddlersClick on this link, have paper & pencil ready, and work through this guide to determine if you are a Novice, Intermediate or Skilled Paddler for lakes, rivers or whitewater.  This will help you choose appropriate trips to match your skills, and maybe encourage you to take in a paddling and/or rescue courses.
Organize a Trip of YOUR OWN!

Ceyana is always looking for more people to organize trips. If you have a trip in mind, work with the Trips Chair to have it added as an official club trip. You don't necessarily need to lead the on-water portion of the trip--the Tripping Chair can help you find someone to fill that role. Contact info can be found here: Contact

A note to non-members...

Registrants are advised to sign up for club membership well in advance if you interested in a course or trip and are not already a member. As an organization wholly run by volunteers we do not have a full time admin to immediately answer questions or handle website issues. Membership payments paid by credit card are usually confirmed much faster than e-transfers or cheques. Our membership term runs through the calendar year so signing up early ensures you receive all pre-season club updates and early notification of courses and trips.

All club trips must be approved by the club (usually by the Tripping Chair) and participants must be current members of the Ceyana Canoe Club to participate on any overnight trip.

Course Change, Cancellation and Refund Policy - Please read the policy on this link before completing any program registration that involves a payment.

We are planning on paddling various reaches on the Upper Red Deer River with camping at the  Cartier Creek campground or the Red Deer River North campground site.  These reaches are for river/white water paddlers with intermediate or better skills. This river can offer multiple rapids in the Class II + to easy III range.  Lots of ledges, rocks to dodge, fast water, great paddling at reasonable flows 50 to 90 cms or so. Paddlers must be equipped with either wet/dry suit, full flotation for the boats, throw bags, helmets and PFDS.

Everyone will need a $50 FOESA membership to camp (click here).

We do cancel if it is ugly! Thunderstorms, big winds, major storm fronts in the forecast, high water >120 cms, etc.  It is best to register so our leaders can send out timely instructions or cancellation!

    • Milk River
    Registration is closed

Once again, Don and the Bow Waters Canoe Club have invited us to join them on the Milk River trip in southern Alberta, with camping for up to 4 days (Jun 30 to July 4) at Gold Springs Park, just south of the Town of Milk River.  At present (Jan. 30) still a "powered" site or two left (contact Don, see below, ASAP), but still lots of tent sites, and room for a few small RV's/trailers "boon-docking " are available.  Don has reserved for us all, and we are to pay the campground on arrival.

The Milk River does require, especially the middle runs, some modest river/WW skills.   Rocks need to dodged, eddies entered and exited smartly, corners stayed to the inside.  This river is a step up from the Pembina above Hwy #16.

Gold Springs park is a spectacular site, and Bow Waters has again booked the back NW corner so you're staying with just paddlers!  One evening is usually a pot luck supper... a reason to go all on its own.  Don has reminded me that; one passes close to the Warner dinosaur dig (dinosaur eggs), the Warner museum in town, and that the Coaldale bird of prey sanctuary are all stops easily made on the way.  And this can be an ideal trip even for non paddlers. His wife loves to swim in the oxbow and go hiking in the area.

If this sounds like your kind of trip you MUST confirm a camp site with Don.  It is best to also register here, on the Ceyana site so our members can coordinate travel, paddling partners, etc.
