The Haunting Nahanni - Tales of Canada's River of No Return
Emmy Award-winning story-teller and historical documentarian for PBS, Austin Hoyt, will be sharing his adventure memoir, “The Haunting Nahanni” (2025), which traces his 1959 and subsequent wilderness expeditions on the South Nahanni River, a waterway so notorious for unexplained disappearances that the RCMP once called it “the Valley of No Return.” The book not only recounts his own experiences on the river, but explores the time of prospectors, vanished trappers, and headless bodies. He has interviewed many who were living at the time of the disappearances and even debunks one of Raymond Patterson’s famous heroic tales as was published in “The Dangerous River” (1954.) A long overdue publication, the first chapters of the Haunting Nahanni were penned in 1967, then filed as Hoyt’s television career took priority. Pandemic housecleaning uncovered his research and Austin decided to finish his tale!
