This clinic introduces the participants to water safety when you go for an unplanned swim.

- catching a throw rope

- the huddle position

- HELP - Heat Escape Lessening Postures

- techniques to avoid getting trapped by objects in water (sweepers/strainers) ( Leaning , leaping, aggressive swimming )

Boats, paddles and PFDs will be supplied. Bring your own PFD if you have one that fits you more comfortably. Bring a swim suit, change of clothes, towel and maybe padlock for the locker room. Be prepared to spend a lot of time in the water.

NCCP Pool & Lake Instructor Course (01 May 2026)

Combination Pool and Lake Kayak Instructor. Course fee includes the $120 CKC/AWA reinvestment fee. If you have already paid this fee for 2026, please email info@paddleuaps.com to reduce your course fee.

Prerequisites:

Minimum Age: 14 years old to take the training course, 16 years old for the evaluation following the course.
Must have intermediate flatwater skills
You must be an AWA member (Please note if you are a UAPS member, you have already paid your AWA membership fee for the year). If you are not an AWA member through a local club, you can become a member here. Ceyana members are not AWA members by default and must register for an individual membership for $5. Alternately, you can become a UAPS Member for other great benefits.
You must supply and transport your own whitewater kayak to the pool and pond OR arrange with course organizers to borrow one. Grand Trunk does not have boats to loan out. Touring kayaks are too large for the course.

Friday, May 1 - Grand Trunk Pool, 7-9 pm, classroom session
Saturday, May 2 - Grand Trunk Pool. There will be a classroom session from 11-3pm, and pool from 4-9pm. Bring lunch for the classroom session.
Sunday, May 3 - Hermitage Pond, start time tbd

Environment: Teaching beginners in the pool and on outdoor flatwater, such as lakes canals, ponds or non-moving water sites (flow less than 10 metres/minute)

Wooden Paddle Repair Clinic (09 May 2026)

Overview:

Wooden Paddle Repair Clinic

Wooden paddles are effective and beautiful, yet require some maintenance and can break. With knowledge and some basic tools they can be fully repaired. This Clinic, led by John Thompson (a canoe and paddle maker) will provide the knowledge necessary to repair basic wear, face cracks and chipped tips thus extending the life of your treasured paddle. Shortening a paddle will also be discussed.

Here’s the catch… You get the knowledge and experience of repairing paddles but the paddles being repaired will be the clubs bent shaft Voyager paddles

You are most welcome to bring your own paddle to get advice on its repair, which could also provide a practical example to the group, but not to work on it at this clinic.

No tools or supplies required. Wearing an effective dust mask is highly recommended.

Given interest John could provide a follow up clinic on building your own paddle.

This course aims to give you an introduction to planning and navigating with the use of a map and a compass. We will meet at Elk Island national park - Astotin Lake (national park pass may be required for entry). Part of the course will be spent navigating on land and on the water.

Orientating yourself on a map

Re-orientate yourself if you get lost .

Participants are expected to have a compass.

Recommended Compass - Silva mirror compass with declination built into it , a regular compass will also do.

Pembina Education Weekend - Sea Kayak Basic Skills (10 Jun 2026)

This is the primary starting point of the Paddle Canada Sea Kayak skills progression. With a focus on foundation skills and knowledge, Basic Kayak Skills inspires students to go out on short paddling excursions in class-0 or calm and sheltered waters.

Sea Kayak Basic Skills is a one-day course plus a 3 hr theory session. Theory session will be June 17th 6pm to 8pm and place to be confirmed. Bring a pen and notebook.

Required equipment: minimum 16 ft sea kayak, spray skirt, paddle, PFD. The club has a limited supply of these items which can be borrowed for the course. Students are responsible for transporting all equipment and must make arrangements several weeks ahead of time. See Equipment for contact info and a list of available equipment (membership login required). Be prepared to swim so bringing a change of clothes and having a wetsuit or dry suit would be good. Pembina River Group Camp (For Education & Trips) (11 Jun 2026)

Ceyana returns to Pembina River Provincial Park for a weekend of paddling, lessons, day trips, camping and socializing.

Day trips on the local lakes, Pembina or Lobstick Rivers? Complete this registration/payment for your camping on our group site.

Education program? Complete a separate course registration/payment plus this register/payment for camping. It is your responsibility to ensure you have the appropriate boat and safety equipment for your course. Log in to Equipment for more equipment info. Need a powered site? If you have a larger RVs requiring power &/or other services you should consider the option of booking a nearby RV site at Pembina River Park. Booking should open March 13, 2026 (90 days prior).

These are the "Earlybird" fees (up to and including May 23, 2026):
- 4 nights at $200 per unit /tent/rv/etc.
- 3 nights at $150 per unit
- 2 nights at $ 100 per unit.

These are the"Regular" fees after May 23, 2026 ($20 more for camping):

- 4 nights at $220 per unit /tent/rv/etc.

- 3 nights at $170 per unit
- 2 nights at $120 per unit.

Registration opens February 01, 2026 and closes June 10, 2026.

4 night camp option: Arrive on Thursday any time after 4:00pm for first choice in camp locations within the group site. Take your time breaking camp on Monday as long as you are packed up by 2:00pm.

Minimum 2 nights booking.

Be sure to register only one person for camping... guests will be charged if you register them... Camp fee is per camp/sleeping unit. It is best to fill up your tent or RV with family and friends to keep the per head cost down!

You will be asked to indicate if you are in an Ed program or coming to day trip. Given we have some one day Ed programs, both are possible. Day trips will be organized each morning of the camp.

All camp participants must be a member of the Ceyana Canoe Club. If you are not already a Ceyana Club member sign up at Membership

Camping is rustic. Available amenities: Tap water, fire pits, firewood for sale, pit toilets, picnic kitchen and NO power!

This intro' to kayaking on moving water program is for those with basic flat-water skills. This course will teach the moving water skills for paddling kayaks on easy moving water.

All equipment will/can be supplied. Participants do need to bring a lunch and a towel and change of clothes, swims do happen occasionally! Rain gear should be brought, and a partial wet or drysuit would be ideal, as well as a helmet (available through CCC) ... only thunder storms chase us off the water. Paddlers are encouraged to bring along their own paddle and lifejacket. For the day long river session paddlers will car pool.

This program is running in conjunction with the Ceyana Canoe Club Education weekend camping trip at the Pembina River Provincial Park.

Transportation: all participants should be prepared to haul their own or a club kayak to the specific location. You can discuss car pooling with fellow course participants

This course will teach the moving water skills for paddling tandem canoes on easy moving water. All equipment will/can be supplied, but participants are encouraged to bring/use their own, especially PFD's. Participants do need to bring a lunch, towel and change of clothes, swims do happen occasionally! Rain gear should be brought... only thunder storms chase us off the water. For canoeing a pair of knee pads are helpful. For the day long river session paddlers will car pool.

Pembina PP Education Weekend-Intro' to Solo River Canoeing - Pond & River (13 Jun 2026)

This intro' solo river canoeing program is for those with basic flat-water solo skills. This course will teach the flat water and moving water skills for paddling solo canoes on easy moving water. All equipment will/can be supplied. You are welcome to bring your own PFD and paddle. Participants do need to bring a lunch and a towel and change of clothes, swims do happen occasionally! Rain gear should be brought... only thunder storms chase us off the water. Carpooling to the various sites for the course will be arranged the morning of the course. For the river sessions paddlers should have at least good raingear, and a partial wet or drysuit would be ideal, and a helmet (available from CCC).

The days will start around 9 am. Saturday morning will be spent on flatwater reviewing solo canoe strokes and learning to maneuver the solo boats efficiently. Saturday afternoon will be on the river in easy class 1 or 2, Sunday will be a full day trip down the river.

This program is being run during the 2026 Ceyana Education weekend at the Pembina Provincial Park.

Sea Kayak Level 1 Skills (24 Jun 2026)

Building on the information learned in Sea Kayak Basic Skills, Sea Kayak Level-1 Skills is a two-day course plus a 3 hr theory session.

Theory session will be on June 24, 2025 from 6-9pm at Location TBD. Bring a pen and notebook.

The course is conducted in slightly rougher water than Basic Kayak, aiming to develop the paddler’s comfort. There is a strong focus on re-entry techniques as well as the skills required to safely plan and execute a day trip.

Required equipment: 16 ft sea kayak, spray skirt, paddle, PFD. The club has a limited supply of these items which can be borrowed for the course. Students are responsible for transporting all equipment and must make arrangements several weeks ahead of time.
